New Football Stadiums in 2009

With the football season starting soon, here’s a look at the new stadiums opening up.

NFL
Dallas Cowboys: Dallas Cowboys Stadium (80,000)      replaces Texas Stadium
Comments: Well after soaking this in for a few weeks, it’s difficult for me to come up with an opinion. There are things that I find absolutely ridiculous: 1) the distracting video board that makes me think more than half the fans are watching the game on that than on the field (and of course the punting factor). 2) Home field advantage seems gone since it is so cavernous it’s hard to keep in noise. 3) The catering to the rich and businesses continue with the inordinate amount of suites. However, it is still an architectural marvel and there are some features that seem great, like the huge glass opening. I try not to completely study stadiums, in case of that random outside chance I ever get there, so I’d have to reserve judgment on if I like it or not until I’m there.

College Football
Minnesota Golden Gophers: TCF Bank Stadium (50,000)         replaces the Metrodome
Comments: Excellent, Excellent, Excellent! I am thrilled to see the Gophers get their own facility AND the Metrodome
still being home to the Vikings. Win-Win in my opinion (plus the Metrodome is my fave NFL dome, so loud!)

Akron Zips: InfoCision Stadium (30,000)      replaces the Rubber Bowl
Comments: Good to see Akron get an on-campus stadium. However, a horrible name replaces a great name. Seems like
the Rubber Bowl was deteriorating and had seen its time. Still sad to see old places go, though according to
Wikipedia it still may host high school football. After a ton of googling, I can’t find whether it will still host
games.

All-Day Baseball in Williamsport

Posted by Sean Rowland on August 24, 2009

Lamade Stadium

Our baseball double/triple-header started out at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport. What a beautiful ride it is to come up US-15 with so many nice hills. Right before you get to the town, the road takes you up to the top of a hill providing a nice panoramic view. Usually, I’m pretty good with planning these trips, but I failed on this one. I don’t know why I thought, it would be a good idea to arrive 15-30 min before game time. First, the parking is limited, even though the website ‘guide’ said that there are signs directing you on where to park. The only sign I saw was one that had an arrow saying parking straight ahead and I ended up heading toward town. Regardless, we parked on the side of the road, which was fine. By the time we got into the stadium, it was completely full. The outfield seating was generally packed too and this is not the best of ideas with a blazing sun, so we found some shade and watched on the hill from afar. Stupid me not too realize a Sunday Afternoon meant a capacity crowd. It’s just tough to figure when tickets are free (woo-hoo!). Lamade Stadium truly is a wonderful experience. It is a classic old-style and simple ballpark with a completely covered roof. There is seating for 25,000 – 30,000 on the outfield hills and this is one of the more unique settings in sports. There’s essentially two steep hills and one is usually for fans and the other is for kids to slide down on with cardboard. The championship game usually finds the sledding hill packed with fans. The atmosphere is so different than anything I’ve seen before, because kids are the ones playing the game. Overall, had a great time, even though it only lasted about 50 minutes with the mercy rule in effect as San Antonio, TX led Russellville, KY 12-0. I just wish I had a lot more time to watch the game, soak up the atmosphere and wonder around the grounds.

So with the game over very early, it was time for Volunteer Stadium and the International Game (Canada vs Taiwan). That was another mistake in planning. The stadium was packed (even before the main game ended) and there was barely even room to stand. I did spend a little time taking in the game and snapping pictures, getting in the experience…but it was tough. So, we meandered the congregation area in the middle for a little while. There was still an hour and a half until our next game, so it was back to Lamade which was a good idea. Just sitting relaxing in the shaded old stadium was awesome. Overall, we had a good, albeit short time at the Little League World Series, but I should’ve planned it a bit better. The ballparks were very nice and a cool experience to check out. For more details on the ballpark/visit reviews, check out the review to the right.

It was then on to historic Bowman Field, home of the Williamsport Crosscutters, single A affiliate of the Phillies. The short, 10 minute drive across the Susquehanna River to Williamsport was nice as we drove down Millionaire’s Row (a section of historic and huge old homes when the town used to be a Lumber capital). It was great to get to another old ballpark, as its been awhile and I’ve been on a string of new facilities. Always refreshing and very enjoyable for me to see a classic. Bowman Field had most of the old-style features: located in a neighborhood/park area with houses in the outfield, small and tight seating bowl, intimate setting, roof covering most of the seats. Had a good time here, plus was handed free tickets! This was one of the rare times I didn’t buy online and it worked well. Unfortunately, they took my ‘coupon’ and I have to find a way to get a ticket stub (plus, I need to find a souvenir stub from the LLWS). The Cutters blew a 5-0 lead and ended up losing 8-6. This ended my two-game home stadium winning streak. The wife’s favorite part of the game was Baseball Bingo. A pretty cool game, but the PA guy should let fans figure out what the numbers were. The game wrapped up at about 7:45 and it was off to the two hour-plus ride home and the badly timed 3:30 AM alarm for work. Three ballparks in three hours. I think I’ll stick with one in a day next time…but I’m definitely glad that the day worked out and I saw all three nice facilities!

Upcoming Stadium Visit Plans

Posted by Sean Rowland on August 17, 2009

2009-LLWS_09_logoMan, August has just flown by! I can’t believe we’re half-way past the month. Our next stadium trip was going to be Citi Field to see the New York Metropolitans. As usual, there has been a change. First off, because they are playing the Phillies, this is considered a “Gold Game” and there are no upper-level seats left. The cheapest seats available are $60, which is a joke since that is the third-cheapest out of the 20 or so levels of pricing they have. Since this is the new ballparks first year, I’m hoping prices come down a bit next year and we’ll go see a ‘value’ opponent. I really am not cheap, but its hard for me to justify spending $140 (with all those fees), when we can go another time for $60. Plus, we will see two MLB parks this year Philly and Arizona, so I have no problem waiting a season for NYY and NYM.

The other reason for the switch is because the stars have aligned for a trip to the  Lycoming Valley. I have never done a doubleheader, but on Sunday (Aug 23), it will be a tripleheader. There are three stadiums on The List in the Williamsport area (two are in South Williamsport) and all three will be in action on Sunday with the Little League World Series begins in a few days. So, I’ll be making the two-plus hour drive west to catch the US pool game at historic Lamade Stadium at 2 PM, then catch the end of the International game at 5,000 seat Volunteer Stadium, which starts at 3 PM. My guess is Little League games last 1:30. To end the day, across the river in Williamsport, the Single-A CrossCutters play at Bowman Field at 5:05. That’s a lot of baseball, but seeing three parks would be great, especially a couple of very historic ones. Can’t wait!

As for the rest of the year, we’re still gearing up for our Western trip to Phoenix-Grand Canyon-Las Vegas. Both tickets to the Diamondbacks and UNLV Football games have been made and we’re all set. In October, I’m going to be in Norfolk for a conference and was anxiously awaiting the release of the AHL schedule. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and the Admirals are not at home at the Scope arena. There are no other events at any of the other area stadiums, so no facilities to be visited down there…bummer. Also, I’m going to hold off on a November trip to the Prudential Center in Newark and wait till the last regular season game April 12, when the Sabres are in town on a Sunday. So later next month, I’ll be piecing together the rest of the fall schedule.

Quick Review on Madden 2010

Posted by Sean Rowland on August 15, 2009

madden2010

I got my Madden game thanks to Amazon yesterday and after playing a few games, here are some random thoughts: Overall, its a solid game and the player animations are stunning as usual. But, what in the world is the deal with some of the player faces? Dick Jauron looks like he has a new face plastered on his skull (ala that movie with John Travolta) and Bill Belichek looks nowhere near himself. Some of the players look dead on and some are way off. I do like the Pro-Tak features. Probably the best feature is the online franchise. I haven’t tried this as I’m going to do a regular season vs the computer first, but to have a 32-player ‘real season’ conducted is incredible. A couple things that bug me is the presentation. Yes, the graphics and stadiums are beautifully detailed, but how bout more of a pre-game intro? It seems so rushed. It drives me nuts how after you score a TD, the crowd briefly roars and then is back to its normal hum. They talked about bringing the NFL presentation back, but that is still lacking…along with the mail-it-in performance from the commentators. But overall, the game is fun. Definitely my favorite sports game is the NHL series. NHL 09 is just incredible and the play-backability is sick. So addicting…looking forward to that release!

September Vacation

Posted by Sean Rowland on August 8, 2009

sep trip

So I’ve been trying to plan our vacation for a month or so and finally we had some time to figure out exactly what we wanted to do and make some bookings. We are going to spend a week out West in the Desert. I can’t wait, as I’ve never been further West than Pittsburgh. We’re both working Labor Day, so on the next day, Sep 8, we’re going to fly out to Phoenix. We’ll spend a day and a half touring the city and area there and then have a head start as we make the drive to the Grand Canyon. After the Grand Canyon (and a brief stop at the Hoover Dam), we continue driving and stay in Las Vegas from late Thursday to Tuesday Morning. This gives us a nice four days in Vegas. We’re all booked and ready to go!

On the Sports end of things, I’ll be checking out two stadiums and was hoping for a third which is still a possibility. Chase Field will be #71 and my 7th MLB stadium as we’ll be there for the Sep. 9 game vs the Dodgers. Then in Vegas, Sam Boyd Stadium is the destination for the UNLV-Oregon State game Saturday Night. I was hoping the Las Vegas 51s would make the playoffs as we could see a playoff baseball game at Cashman Field that week, but they have no chance to get in (and really haven’t all season with Sacramento way ahead in the standings). The other alternative is Orleans Arena. Now this is purely coincidental, I swear, but after much deliberation, we are going to be staying in the Orleans Hotel & Casino. We really love what we saw with the hotel and there is a ton of fantastic reviews, the price is excellent too, the only downfall is not being on the strip, but we have a rental car . So anyway, the 9,000 seat arena hosts the Las Vegas Wranglers (ECHL) and some college basketball events and is also located in the casino. There are no events currently scheduled, but I’ll at least check out the arena and see if I can get some peaks inside. I am definitely excited for those two games and to see a couple of nice venues.

Those are the plans, in the meantime, the next stadium trip is Citi Field to see the NY Mets. That is tentative, but hoping it should work out. Tonight is the induction of Bruce Smith and Ralph Wilson to the Hall of Fame. Also looking forward to checking out the Bills tomorrow in the Hall of Fame game, mainly to see how the OL is gelling together.
