Can you really build a ballpark in 2 months?

The answer is probably not.  There are some goofy things going on in the Independent Northern League (Baseball). This year’s expansion team, the Lake County Fielders are in the schedule and apparently all set to begin their inaugaral season. One problem…their ballpark is not completed. It’s not even started! However, ownership keeps saying it will be ready for the June 11th opener and they have links on their website to buy season and single-game tickets. They even are asking for a deposit. All this to watch games at a place where ground has not been broken yet.

Things get even crazier when it was only three weeks ago that the team announced they were moving the location of the ballpark. As of early in the week, plans were still on for the June 11th opener, but the team just announced Wednesday that it’s going to be “late June or early July”. Good luck. The co-owner of the Fielders is Kevin Costner and I’ll refrain from any easy jokes.

I feel bad for the people of Lake County, which is Northwest of Chicago. Zion is in the Northeast tip of the state and though the region is full of minor league baseball within a two-hour drive, it’s a shame that locals have been teased and kept un-informed of what is going on with their team.

  1. Hey Sean-

If they ever complete it, it is on my to-do list for the summer. Not only is the ballpark a difficult proposition, but I have had a lot of trouble getting a hold of anyone in the front office. We’ll see how it goes…They do have a cool logo though, I’ll give them that.
