Stadium Reviews Completed

Posted by Sean Rowland on July 30, 2009

Finally the Stadium Reviews to the right hand side of the page have all been completed and are now on the site. That took some time, but it certainly would have taken longer to redo everything from my original format in Word. A couple of notes: The first few reviews I redid a little bit because they were basically hometown stadiums and arenas. I did not get a digital camera until March of 2004, so all of the photos prior to #26 Copps Coliseum were scanned in from a regular camera. Thats why the quality sucks with those images. Otherwise, when I get back from a new place you will see the review within a few days.

I’ve been planning a Vegas trip for the last few weeks and its almost booking time, I just want to make sure we are good to go with everything. Being gone for seven days, I really want to see 3 stadiums (ideally, I want seven but that wouldn’t go over well), but it looks like we’ll get in two. The plan is to head to Phoenix to spend a day and a half there and see Chase Field, drive to the Grand Canyon and then to Vegas for five days. While in Vegas, UNLV is playing Oregon State at Sam Boyd Stadium, so we’ll check that out. Too bad the 51s (triple A baseball) stink, or else we could have seen a playoff game. I’ll update the schedule and another post once we’re finallized and good to go!

Lakewood Report

We’re back from a full day at the Jersey Shore. Before heading off to FirstEnergy Park and seeing the BlueClaws, we took off to see some of the shore at Point Pleasant Beach. The beach and area were pretty nice and there were definitely some cool stuff. There is a long boardwalk and in the middle is where a lot of attractions are. We spent some time at the aquarium and playing some mini-golf. We ran out of time to grab dinner because there are some big pains into heading here. A hot Saturday in mid-July = crappy traffic. The Garden State Parkway was packed and we lost about 45 min in traffic. Once your out of the traffic, you then have to find a place to park, which is no problem if you want to pay $18 freakin dollars! No thanks, we’ll walk from metered spots on the street. Oh yeah, you want to lay on our beach, that will be $8. I think we’ll pass on day trips here, however I’ve never seen true “beach houses” before and those we’re pretty awesome. It would be a sweet summer to rent that with friends and have a house that sits right on the boardwalk and beach.

We then headed about 20 minutes west to the other side of the parkway in Lakewood. Once again, I really enjoyed this park. We’ve been on a nice string of stadia lately (except for NH). I love how this park uses all of the space it has, by filling it with lawn areas or picnic spots. It is also enclosed, which is great when there is no view. I’ve only seen the minor league 360 degree concourse in Allentown and they had one here too, another great touch. Food prices were high (almost the same as Philly), but that was really my only complaint. Great atmosphere in a very well done ballpark. Kudos Lakewood! To check out a more detailed review, it is on the right of the page and I’m hoping to have it up later today. Otherwise, it will be up on Wednesday as I’m off to a brief work retreat, a little further down the shore in Atlantic City.

Next Stop…Jersey Shore

Posted by Sean Rowland on July 6, 2009

jersey-shore

First, let me say that I am NOT a Jersey Shore guy, nor do I have any real desire to go to the shore. I have now lived in NJ for almost five years and proudly have yet to take a trip to the shore. I’ve been to AC (Atlantic City) many times, but that’s not the true ‘shore’, which is more like Monmouth and Ocean County. A lot of people absolutely love the Summer’s there, which is really great and I can understand that. But the shore, particularly the beach, just isn’t for me. It’s probably my pasty white skin and my rapid tendency to get sunburn.

With that being said, there is a ballpark near the shore and that sits in Lakewood. FirstEnergy Stadium is home to the very successful BlueClaws. We are going to be heading down to see a game the weekend of the 18th/19th and likely will take in some of the sights and sounds of the shore. Probably hanging around the Point Pleasant area, which reading up in NJ Magazine, does seem like a great town and place to spend an afternoon. The plan was originally to do this and head to a Sunday 5 PM game. However, I’m going to be heading down to AC for a work conference on Sunday. Now, this would have been absolutely perfect…if I wasn’t traveling with somebody. That would have been an amazing aligning of the stars. It’s about 90% certain I will be traveling with someone, if not, I will hit up the ballpark and game on the way down.

Otherwise, it’s going to be a little bit of driving as, it looks we are planning to go on Saturday and then head home and I’ll add an hour to the same drive the next day. First place Lakewood takes on the Lexington Legends at 7:05 PM. Looking forward to visiting this ballpark and the area!
